A grounding sheet – often also called an earthing sheet – brings the idea of “barefoot on the grass” into your bedroom. In this guide we explain how a grounding sheet is made, how to connect it safely and what to look for when buying one.
What is a grounding sheet?
A grounding sheet is a flat or fitted sheet with conductive threads – usually silver threads – woven into it. A cable is attached via a press stud and connected to the earth contact of a grounded wall socket or to a grounding rod in the soil. When your skin lies on the sheet, a conductive contact with earth potential is created.
How does the connection work – and is it safe?
The grounding plug uses only the earth contact of the socket. The pins that normally carry current are made of plastic and do not conduct. So no current flows through the sheet and no energy is used.
- Only use a correctly grounded socket. A socket tester checks this in seconds.
- Without a suitable socket (e.g. when camping) you can connect via an outdoor connection kit with a grounding rod.
- If you have active implants such as a pacemaker, ask your doctor first.
Flat sheet or fitted sheet?
A grounding fitted sheet goes over your mattress like a normal fitted sheet, stays in place and does not slip – ideal for everyday use. A grounding flat sheet is simply laid on top and is more flexible: you can put it over your existing sheet, take it to the sofa or use it in a hotel bed when travelling.
Material and silver content: what matters?
Many people wonder whether more silver “grounds more strongly”. The short answer: above a certain share of conductive fibres the contact is established. The differences lie mainly in comfort, feel and durability. A higher silver content can keep the conductivity for longer after many washes.
| Model | Material | Special feature |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | 89 % organic cotton, 11 % silver | high silver content, organic cotton |
| Standard | 94 % cotton, 6 % silver | affordable way to start |
| Bamboo Balance | 51 % bamboo, 42 % cotton, 7 % silver | especially soft and cool |
The right size
Measure the length, width and depth of your mattress. Wurzler™ grounding fitted sheets are available from 90 × 200 to 210 × 200 cm for mattresses up to 33 cm deep. For double beds with two mattresses, two separate sheets are often more practical – for example in the couple set.
Does my skin need to touch the sheet?
For a conductive contact, direct skin contact works best – for example on your legs, feet or arms. Thin clothing can reduce the contact.
Care: how your grounding sheet stays conductive
- Wash at up to 40 °C, tumble dry at up to 50 °C
- No fabric softener – it coats the silver threads
- Ideally use a special detergent for silver yarns
Buying checklist
