FAQs about Grounding & Wurzler™
FAQs
We know that grounding can sound a little unusual at first. That is why we have collected the questions we are asked most often. Honestly and without jargon, so you understand what Wurzler™ products can and cannot do.
Questions and answers about sheets and mats:
Do you have to sleep directly on the grounding sheet, or can you put another sheet over it?
It's best to sleep directly on the grounding sheet.
Only then is the conductive connection to your body reliable.
An extra sheet over the grounding sheet can greatly reduce or interrupt the grounding, especially with cotton, linen or synthetic material.
In short:
Sleeping directly on it = optimal contact.
An extra sheet in between = usually less or no grounding.
If you want to protect the sheet, use a very thin cotton cloth at most. Direct skin contact remains best.
What about nightwear (T-shirt, nightdress, pyjamas, ...)?
Nightwear is no problem.
A T-shirt, nightdress or pyjamas generally won't interrupt grounding.
There's almost always an area of exposed skin – your hands, arms, neck or feet, for example – where contact can be made.
Does grounding also work with a mains cut-off switch?
Yes. A mains demand switch disconnects the live and neutral conductors, but the earth bar remains separately connected. So the sheet can still ground you.
Is it safe? (90 kΩ safety resistor, thunderstorms)
A fixed 90 kΩ resistor is built into the connecting cord. It greatly limits any possible fault currents. During a thunderstorm, unplug the cord from the sheet, just as you would with the outdoor grounding kit.
Why? If lightning strikes a house, high voltages can run through the earthing system and the electrical installation for a fraction of a second.
Even though our cord contains a 90 kΩ safety resistor, in such an exceptional situation it is safer not to have a direct connection to the house earth.
It's a precaution, comparable to unplugging appliances during a thunderstorm. Under normal conditions, the system is safe.
Grounding via the socket – is that real grounding?
Yes, provided there is a correctly connected earth conductor. In very old installations, the earthing may be set up differently. If in doubt, have it checked by a qualified electrician or use our outdoor grounding kit.
Will I notice anything?
Many customers find regular grounding calming and pleasant as part of their sleep routine. What you notice varies from person to person. Wurzler™ products are not medical devices and do not replace medical advice.
How can I check whether the sheet is conductive?
Our products are tested before dispatch. With a multimeter you can measure the AC body voltage: black probe to earth, red probe in your hand. Without the sheet you will often see a few volts; in contact with the sheet the value should drop noticeably. Many meters display this in volts, not in mV.
Why does my continuity tester not show continuity?
Because the cord contains a 90 kΩ resistor. A continuity tester expects something close to a short circuit. That is deliberately not the case here. This way, earth potential is reached slowly and in a controlled manner.
What about pacemakers, implanted devices or metal implants?
If you have active implants such as a pacemaker, we do not recommend grounding via a socket. Only after consulting a doctor, and exclusively with an outdoor grounding kit. We deliberately do not give any general medical recommendation here, because devices and situations differ.
1. Medical responsibility:
Pacemakers differ depending on the manufacturer, model, sensitivity and implant site.
2. Individual differences:
Some devices are more sensitive to electromagnetic fields than others. Grounding does not generate any active voltage itself, but caution is important here.
3. Legal certainty:
A general statement such as “no problem” would mean taking responsibility for a medical device. We neither want to nor are permitted to do that.
Does the sheet or the mat reduce EMF/5G?
Grounding does not shield against wireless signals. It can reduce AC body voltage relative to earth, but it is no substitute for shielding.
It's worth distinguishing between:
- Electromagnetic radiation such as 5G, Wi-Fi or radio signals is not "stored" in the body and therefore cannot be discharged via a grounding sheet. This kind of radiation requires dedicated shielding.
- Electrical voltage and static charge, on the other hand, can build up on the body – for example from cables, devices or friction. This voltage can be discharged through grounding.
Care and lifespan of the sheets
Wash gently without bleach or fabric softener, at low temperatures and without overheating in the tumble dryer. This keeps the silver threads conductive for a long time.
Sizes, fit and returns
Fitted sheets fit mattresses up to around 33 cm deep. Custom sizes are possible. Opened or used bedding cannot be exchanged for hygiene reasons.
Questions and answers about shoes
Where do I ground myself with the shoes?
On conductive, natural surfaces: soil, grass, stone and unsealed concrete. Not on tarmac, sealed concrete or plastic flooring.
Is the sole really conductive?
Yes. Thanks to our special material blend, the rubber sole is permanently conductive and connected to the footbed via silver threads. This creates the connection from your foot to the earth.
0.00 V in the video – what does it mean?
It shows the AC body voltage relative to earth. Good grounding usually means a significantly lower reading, often close to 0 V. This is not a resistance measurement.
Do grounding shoes make sense in the city?
In parks, on soil or stone: yes. On typical urban surfaces such as tarmac or tiles with an insulating layer, you won't be grounded. In that case, you still get the main barefoot benefits: a wide toe box, a thin flexible sole and Zero Drop.
Do the shoes increase my exposure to radiation (Wi-Fi/5G)?
No. Grounding does not amplify wireless signals and doesn't turn you into an antenna. Nor does it shield RF signals. These are two separate topics.
Risk of lightning?
Grounding shoes do not attract lightning. In a thunderstorm, the usual outdoor safety rules apply, regardless of your shoes.
How can I test the grounding of the shoes?
Just as with the sheet: measure the AC body voltage, with black to earth and red in your hand. With grounding shoes on natural ground, the value should drop noticeably.
How is this different from ESD shoes?
ESD shoes are designed to meet industrial standards for static discharge, not for grounding with the natural earth outdoors. They are usually not conductive enough to bring the body to earth potential the way genuine grounding shoes do. Our focus is on conductivity to your surroundings on natural surfaces.
Care and lifespan
We recommend hand washing. Take out the insole, brush the shoes clean with a little water and then wipe them with a cloth. Let the insole and shoes dry separately at room temperature. Do not pull out or damage the inner contacts with silver threads.
Are you just as grounded as when barefoot?
Standing barefoot on the earth is still the most direct contact. Our shoes enable grounding while keeping the soles of your feet protected: a practical solution if you can't or don't want to go barefoot.
